We Discovered Dispersed Camping

Planning a Utah road trip? We discovered amazing free dispersed camping near Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, and Capitol Reef while visiting five national parks in five days.

Utah was truly one for the books.

Normally we use Hipcamp to find unique places to stay, but after watching a few YouTube videos, we decided to try something new—and save a little money. That curiosity led me to the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) website, where I learned about something called dispersed camping.

If you love national parks but hate crowded campgrounds, this might be your new favorite way to travel.

What Is Dispersed Camping?

Dispersed camping means camping outside of developed campgrounds on public lands, such as national forests or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) land.

Here are a few quick things to know:

  • Most dispersed campsites are free or very low cost

  • Campsites are first-come, first-served

  • There are no amenities (no bathrooms, water, or electricity)

  • Campsites are often spread far apart, offering more privacy

  • Many sites are on unpaved roads, so high-clearance vehicles are recommended

If you're visiting a popular national park, arriving early in the day improves your chances of finding a great spot.

Visiting 5 Utah National Parks Without Reservations

After doing our research, booking our flight, and picking up our Jeep rental, we were ready to hit the road. Maps downloaded. Snacks packed.

Five national parks in five days.

To be honest, we were a little nervous. We're used to reserving campsites weeks in advance, and this time we were heading into some of the most popular parks in the country without a single reservation.

I knew we weren't the only travelers searching for quiet places to land after a long day of exploring.

But the incredible Utah landscapes quickly distracted us from the stress—and thankfully, we found beautiful campsites each night.

Tom’s Best Spring Road

Free dispersed camping near Bryce Canyon National Park. Dixie National Forest.

This site didn’t have great views, but we were able to find a spot that wasn’t close to others. We didn’t hear any road noise, but I have seen reviews that said they did.

All three campsites were easy to locate using Google Maps, but I highly recommend downloading maps ahead of time because cell service can be unreliable in these areas.

We visited May 15–21, and the crowds were manageable with plenty of open spaces and privacy.

Out of the three sites, Zion Wright Family Ranch was our absolute favorite. The cows, the quiet landscape, and the stunning views made it unforgettable.

Is Dispersed Camping Worth It?

Absolutely.

You really can’t beat free campsites with incredible views and the peaceful feeling of being surrounded by nature.

While we haven’t had much luck finding dispersed camping here in Ohio (it seems almost nonexistent), we’re excited to explore more spots on future adventures.
